RUSSELL WEDNESDAY (F. F. Russell, amer. the bacteriologist, 1870 — 1960) — the dense combined differential and diagnostic medium intended for release of pure growths of enterobakteriya, and also definition of their enzymatic activity in relation to lactose and glucose. It is offered by Russell in 1911

the page is prepared on the basis of 1% of nutrient agar on a meat, casein repitch on Hottingera (see. Hottingera agar ), barmy autolysate, etc., to the Crimea add 1% of lactose, 0,1% of glucose and the color indicator reacting discoloration at shift of pH in the acid party. Enzymatic activity is considered on discoloration of the indicator. Intensive decolourization of all environment indicates fermentation of lactose. The river of page with Andrade's indicator (see Andrade the indicator) reddens, with the indicator of BP (water blue and rosolic to - that) — becomes blue, about a bromtimolblaa — gains yellow color. Discoloration of the environment only in a column indicates fermentation of one glucose since because of small concentration of this monosugar the indicator catches shift of pH only in a column where thanks to anaerobic conditions fermentation of glucose happens more intensively. On R. pages determine gas generation by emergence of vials of gas in the thickness of Wednesday, ruptures of the environment.

R.'s use by the village saves mediums and reduces terms of carrying out a research, allows in one test tube (instead of three) to receive pure growth of bacteria and to define its enzymatic activity concerning two carbohydrates.

The river of page was a prototype of a number of the modern combined differential and diagnostic circles of the complicated structure allowing to define at the same time a little biochemical, signs of bacteria (see. Differential and diagnostic environments ). An example of such environments are a three-sugar agar with urea across Olkenitsky (see. Olkenitsky environment ), a three-sugar agar with iron (the TSI environment — triple sugar iron agar).
