HIRSUTISM (Latin hirsutus hairy) — the excess pilosis at women which is expressed emergence of moustaches, beards and also growth of hair on a trunk and extremities. Can meet as at some endocrine, and not endocrine diseases. It is observed also at healthy women as manifestation of constitutional features.

Pathogeny It is difficult and connected with participation of many neurohumoral factors from which main thing is increase in secretion of androgens or sensitization of fabrics to their action.

In 1964 H. To T. Starkova it is offered classification G.: 1) constitutional (at healthy women); 2) caused by administration of male sex hormones (at cancer therapy of a female genital, metrorrhagias and other diseases); 3) At neuroendocrinal diseases: an adrenogenital syndrome (a hyperplasia of bark of adrenal glands, a tumor of bark of adrenal glands), a virilny syndrome of ovarian genesis (an arrhenoblastoma, lipidokletochny tumors, polycystic regenerations of ovaries), an acromegalia, Itsenko's disease — Cushing, climacteric frustration, etc.; 4) At defeats of c. N of page (tumors of a brain, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy); 5) At local impacts on skin or skin diseases.

Constitutional G. is more often observed at inhabitants of the South. Pilosis is usually not plentiful, but if hair to pull out and shave, their growth amplifies and they grow coarse. Constitutional G.'s diagnosis is based on data of the anamnesis and inspection. Treatment at this form G. is not required.

At introduction to the women having cancer of mammary glands or an ovary, drugs of male sex hormones (androgens) along with G.'s phenomena their disturbance is observed monthly, symptoms of virilescence (a hypertrophy of a clitoris, a deep voice). After cancellation androgens (see) these phenomena (including and a hirsutism) gradually disappear. At adrenogenital syndrome (see), connected with a hyperplasia of bark of an adrenal gland, there are a beard and moustaches with age, growth of hair is observed on all body, and on the head hair drop out. Use at this disease of corticosteroid drugs at any age leads to G.'s reduction; the hirsutism caused by a tumor of bark of adrenal glands — androsteroma (see), is often one of the first symptoms of a disease and it is, as a rule, sharply expressed. The oncotomy promotes involution of. At a virilny syndrome of ovarian genesis of G. sometimes is the main symptom; it is often combined with primary infertility and uniform obesity (see. Shteyna-Leventalya syndrome ). After treatment by progesterone or operations of a resection of ovaries G.'s expressiveness decreases. At a tumor of an ovary to G.'s (arrhenoblastoma) it is sharply expressed; discrepancy between degree of a hypertrophy of a clitoris is sometimes observed and by G. Eto's degree it can be observed also at other ovarian tumors. Is a frequent symptom at Itsenko's disease — Cushing (see. Itsenko — Cushing a disease ). It is expressed much more weakly, than at tumors of bark of adrenal glands or tumors of an ovary, and, as a rule, decreases after radiation of interstitial and pituitary area. At G.'s acromegalia it is observed seldom. At nervous and some skin diseases it is usually expressed poorly.

An admissible symptomatic action at G. is epilation (see), its use shall be coordinated with the doctor.
