BACTERICIDAL LAMPS (bacterium[a] + lat. to kill with caedere) — the devices consisting of the sources of bactericidal radiation mounted in special fittings.

B.'s development of the lake began in the twenties the current century in connection with creation of special sources of bactericidal ultraviolet radiation.

On B.'s design of the lake divide on suspended — wall and ceiling (fig. 1 and 2) and mobile — beacon-type type and on a support (fig. 3 and 4); on a functional sign — on devices of direct radiation, screened and combined.

Basic element of B. of the lake is the germicidal lamp — BUV (bactericidal uviol) or (AB (arc bactericidal). The lamp represents a glass tube, on the ends a cut the self-defecating oxidic electrodes from the double tungsten helix activated by carbonic salts of barium and strontium are sealed. The tube is filled with a small amount of mercury and inert gas under pressure in several millimeters of mercury. A source of ultraviolet radiation is the category of low pressure in vapors of mercury happening between electrodes during the giving of tension on them. The ground mass of radiation (to 80 — 90%) falls on area of the line of 253,7 nanometers.

The domestic industry releases the 15, 30 and 60 W lamps. Necessary external environment of lamps is existence of the pusko-regulating equipment (ballast resistance, as a rule, a throttle, elements of ignition, condensers). Inclusion of a lamp in network without consecutive inclusion of ballast resistance leads to an instant exit it out of operation.

In addition to lamps and elements of the electrical circuitry, irradiators depending on appointment and functional features include reflectors and the screen, fittings for fastening of lamps, nodes, details and the special equipment (switches, the relay and so forth).

B. lakes are intended for disinfecting of air in rooms (operating rooms, dressing rooms, chambers, etc.) and radiations of various objects for the purpose of their sterilization. The medical industry produces suspended irradiators with the 15 and 30 W lamps in several constructive modifications. Irradiators are supplied with several lamps (2 — 4), a part from to-rykh is screened, a part serves for direct radiation; inclusion of lamps separate, irradiators it is possible to use in absence and in the presence of people depending on a duty. The irradiator mobile beacon-type with 6 lamps on 30 W serves only for direct radiation and the hl is intended for bystry disinfecting of air. obr. in operating rooms. Indoors up to 100 m 3 decrease in an obsemenyaemost by microbes within 15 min. for 90% is reached. The irradiator mobile on a support (2 lamps on 30 W) can be used for direct and screened radiation depending on position of the case: in the lower situation — direct, in upper (at turn of the case on 90) — screened. In the latter case the irradiator can work a long time in the presence of people.

At B.'s operation by the lake it is necessary to use safety spectacles, at long stay in the field of a radiation effect the bared body parts shall be closed. During the work of bactericidal lamps considerable release of ozone is observed, in this regard it is necessary to respect the rules of ozonization (see. Ozone ).

The B. lake should be stored in the closed heated room at t ° from 5 to 35 ° and relative humidity of air no more than 70%. Air of the room shall not contain the impurity causing corrosion. A shelf-life before represervation — 2 years.
