TSENKOVSKY Lev Semenovich

TSENKOVSKY Lev Semenovich (1822 — 1887) is the domestic botanist and the microbiologist, the member correspondent. The St. Petersburg academy of Sciences (1881), one of founders of a protozoology and bacteriology in Russia.

Graduated from natural department of Peterbu r gs to about go un-that in 1844 and it was left for usovershenstvo about in and-niya at un-those; in 1845 defended the master dissertation on stories of development of coniferous plants. In 1847 — 1849 participated as the naturalist in an expedition to Africa. In 1850 — 1853 professor of botany of Demidovsky lyceum in Yaroslavl, in 1854 — 1861 professor of botany St. Petersburg un-that. In 1856 defended the dissertation on an academic degree of doctor botany «About the lowest seaweed and infusorians». From 1862 to 1863 professor of botany at the Main school (un-those) in Warsaw, from 1865 to 1871 professor of botany Novorossiysk un-that (Odessa), and since 1872 — Kharkiv un-that.

He was engaged with the pupils in studying of a sibirskoyazva much (see), independently developed (1883) a method of production of an anthracic vaccine since the pasterovsky vaccine was monopolized by «Society of pasterovsky vaccines» and the method of its production was not published (see Immunization). L. S. Tsenkovsky's vaccine was applied in our country before introduction of new anthracic vaccine STI (1942). L. S. The prices by Sunday the cue took active part in the organization of the pasterovsky station in Kharkiv (1887). His largest scientific merit is development of an ontogenetic method in studying of the inferior plants (seaweed, mushrooms, bacteria) and the lowest animals (an infusorian, a radiolaria). L. S. Tsenkovsky developed the evolutionary ideas even before emergence of theories of Ch. Darvin, and after issue of «Origin of species» (1859) actively propagandized Ch. Darvin's doctrine. It entered a microscope into teaching botany. L. S. Tsenkovsky described 43 new species of microorganisms.

In 1879 L. S. Tsenkovsky investigated the reasons of formation of a so-called klek (the muciform weight which is formed on the crushed beet at sugar refining), having shown what klek is accumulation of the unknown for science of a microorganism.
