THE WESTERN BERLIN — independent political unit with the special international status. 3. B. it is located in the center of the territory of the German Democratic Republic.

The area is 479 km 2 , population of 1,99 million people (1975). 3. B. — the large industrial center. Its territory is divided into 12 city districts. The legislature belongs to the Chamber of Deputies (parliament). Executive power is carried out by the senate (government) headed by the ruling burgomaster. The most part of the productive population is made by workers (45%) and employees (45,7%).

The natural movement of the population in 1974 was characterized by the following indicators (on 1000 people): birth rate 9,0, mortality 18,9 (natural increase negative). Child mortality 18,7 on 1000 live-born. For structure of the population 3. B. are characteristic the low specific weight of the children's population (children up to 15 years in 1975 made only 16%) and very high specific weight of elderly people (22,6% of persons of 65 years and is more senior).

From infectious diseases in 1971 had the greatest distribution veins. diseases, tuberculosis, infectious hepatitis, infectious enterita.
