THE WESTERN BERLIN — independent political unit with the special international status. 3. B. it is located in the center of the territory of the German Democratic Republic.
The area is 479 km 2 , population of 1,99 million people (1975). 3. B. — the large industrial center. Its territory is divided into 12 city districts. The legislature belongs to the Chamber of Deputies (parliament). Executive power is carried out by the senate (government) headed by the ruling burgomaster. The most part of the productive population is made by workers (45%) and employees (45,7%).
The natural movement of the population in 1974 was characterized by the following indicators (on 1000 people): birth rate 9,0, mortality 18,9 (natural increase negative). Child mortality 18,7 on 1000 live-born. For structure of the population 3. B. are characteristic the low specific weight of the children's population (children up to 15 years in 1975 made only 16%) and very high specific weight of elderly people (22,6% of persons of 65 years and is more senior).
From infectious diseases in 1971 had the greatest distribution veins. diseases, tuberculosis, infectious hepatitis, infectious enterita. Malignant new growths, coronary heart disease, vascular defeats of c were the main reasons for death. Management of health care is performed by senator on health care and environmental control who has administrative facilities. In each district there is a management of health care, a cut will organize work of medical institutions and controls activity of the general practitioners and specialists rendering extra hospital medical aid to the population.
Stationary help to the population 3. B. (1973) it would turn out in 135 with bed fund of 35 226 beds (1 bed on 57 people, 1972). From them 31-tsa (57% of beds) is public, 67 (34,3% of beds) the religious and charitable organizations possessed also 37 private BCs (8,7% of beds).
In 1975 in 3. B. 6630 doctors (33,3 doctors on 10 thousand population) and 1303 dentists are registered (6,5 on 10 thousand population). In 1972 in medical institutions 3. B. 16 347 people of an average and support personnel, including 8196 nurses, 1292 pediatric sisters, 147 midwifes, 2002 medical and technical assistants, 3210 nurses and assistants to nurses, etc. worked.
In 3. B. 578 drugstores, from them 519 public in which 1598 druggists and 1876 people of other personnel (1975) work.
For 3. B. existence of the enterprises modern chemical - pharm is characteristic. and the medico-tool industry, products provide a cut not only internal requirements, but also are a subject of export.
About 90% of the population 3. B. it is captured by social insurance on a case of disability due to illness and rendering medical aid. Funds for social insurance are formed of assignments from the salary of workers and employees and contributions of businessmen.
