SIDEROSIS OF A EYE (siderosis bulbi; Greek sideros iron + - osis) — the adjournment in tissues of an eye of inorganic and organic compounds of iron connected with existence in an eye of a ferriferous foreign body, napr, a splinter of steel or cast iron.

The ions of iron which are chipping off from a ferriferous foreign body and passing into solution form in an eye at first inorganic compounds (like hydroxides), and then, taking up with proteins of fabrics, organic. Compounds of iron are in tissues of an eye as it is intracellular, and vnekletochno. In cells of tissues of eye the phenomena of the coagulative necrosis which is expressed pycnosis of kernels, wrinkling of cytoplasm and mummification of cells are found. Nervous cells of a retina are most sensitive to toxic effect of iron, to-rye perish at accumulation of compounds of iron in them, muscle cells of an iris and epithelial cells of a crystalline lens are less sensitive.

Clinically distinguish pleasant, local, This Year, the developing in a zone of finding of a foreign body, and indirect, widespread, developing in fabrics eyes remote from the place of a bedding of a foreign body, in connection with diffusion of gradually dissolved iron.

Wedge, signs direct This year, the most available to observation and studying in the presence of a ferriferous foreign body in a cornea, are expressed by quite bystry emergence of a zone around it to the yellowish or brownish fine-grained pigmentation reminding a rust. Indirect develops more often This year when the ferriferous foreign body is in a back piece of an eye, but signs of a siderosis appear in all departments of an eyeglobe. Indirect it is characterized by emergence of a fine-grained yellowish-brown pigment in the deepest layers and on a back surface of a cornea, in chamber (watery) moisture, in a corner of an anterior chamber of an eye (angle of iris), under a front bag of a crystalline lens, discoloration (heterochromia) of an iris, a moderate mydriasis and slackness of pupillary tests This year.

At This year perhaps gradual development cataracts (see). In vitreous (see) the fine-grained golden and rusty suspension sometimes is found. In a retina the changes reminding pigmental dystrophy can gradually develop (see. Tapetoretinalny dystrophies ). At long existence the atrophy develops This year retinas (see) and optic nerve (see). Extent of disturbance of visual functions depends on weight of changes in a retina and the refracting environments of an eye; an early symptom is This year hemeralopia (see). Speed of development and degree of manifestation of symptoms at indirect depend on the size of a foreign body, the place of its bedding, encystment or, on the contrary, a free arrangement, bigger or smaller oxidability, to transition of iron to solution This year, etc. Usually they develop a month later and more after hit in an eye of a ferriferous foreign body.

For detection of ferriferous splinters in an eye used the device earlier — sideroskopy. In a crust, time sideroskop practically do not apply, and for identification in an eyeglobe of ferriferous foreign bodys carry out radiological and ultrasound examination of an eye (see. Foreign bodys, intraocular ).

Treatment at developed This year generally symptomatic.

The prevention of development requires timely removal of the ferriferous foreign body which got into an eye This year (see. Magnets medical ).
