SHIP HYGIENE — the section of hygiene studying a working condition and life on vessels and developing the corresponding hygienic standards and preventive actions.

Standards of microclimatic conditions in ship rooms are regulated by «Health regulations for sea vessels of the USSR». They determined the normative temperature, humidity and speed of the movement of air in inhabited and service premises, on posts of management etc. during the summer and winter periods for different districts of swimming, and also the recommended sizes of heat drops depending on outside weather conditions are developed.

Dignity. rules for sea vessels of the USSR regulated microclimatic conditions during the winter and summer period for the ship rooms equipped with systems of heating and ventilation and also are defined during the use of air conditioning systems of size of air exchange and norm of air delivery to various ship rooms. The difference between air temperature in cabins and outside shall not exceed 15 °. When it exceeds 15 °, it is necessary to enter step thermal gradients (locking) that is reached by cooling of air in corridors, Relative humidity of air is maintained within 40 — 60%.

Laying of the main pipelines of steam through inhabited and medical rooms is not allowed. Ventilation of ship rooms shall be forced-air and exhaust with artificial or natural motivation (see. Natural ventilation shall be independent for each room on one deck without branched system in the horizontal plane. All stitched ventilating devices and exhaust openings of natural ventilation should be equipped with removable devices of protection against mosquitoes and midges. On a galley air delivery by means of artificial ventilation needs to be made to the main jobs (to a plate, finishing tables etc.) via the airdistributing devices allowing to regulate its direction and speed of the movement. Installation of inclined umbrellas over galley plates is forbidden. In dining rooms, restaurants the arrangement of stitched and exhaust openings shall provide uniform ventilation of all room. Forced ventilation of power departments shall be artificial. The induced air moves in a working zone on places of execution of constant watch, and also on repair platforms. Each vessel shall be provided with water in enough. The device of uniform system of supply with sweet water is recommended, quality a cut shall meet requirements imposed to drinking to water (see). The minimum consumption rate of water on one person a day on vessels of the first category: drinking — 50 l, economic — 100; on vessels of the second category — respectively 40 and 90 l; on vessels of the third category — 30 and 40 l.

Atomic vessels. For ensuring radiation safety during the carrying out repair work in a zone of a high security the individual means of protection of crew members (isolating pneumosuits, respirators, special footwear, etc.) are used. Means for collecting and temporary storage of liquid and solid radioactive waste allow to transfer them to coastal or floating constructions for deactivation or continuous storage.

Experience of long operation of atomic ice breakers demonstrates that the system of radiation safety created on them allows to service the nuclear power station without reradiations of crew and excludes environmental pollution by radioactive materials. Thus, the problem of ensuring radiation safety on atomic vessels found the successful solution in the USSR.
