JURMALA — the seaside climatic and balneological resort in the Latvian SSR. One of the largest resort districts of the country known also as Riga beach. Includes group of the resort settlements located throughout 30 km along the coast of the Gulf of Riga to the West from Riga: Lielupe, Bulduri, Dzintari, Mayori, Dubulta, Yaundubulta, Pumpuri, Melluzhi, Asari, Vayva-ri, Yaunkemeri. Also balneological and mud resort of Kemeri (see) which is in 5 and from the coast of the Gulf of Riga belongs to Jurmala.

The resort is founded at the end of 19 century. The first clinic counted on service of 30 people began to function in 1870.

Climate sea, soft, the Atlantic Ocean exerts impact on its formation. The summer moderately warm (average temperature of July 17 °), in separate days air can get warm to 32 °. Winter moderately soft (average temperature of January — 5 °); frosty weather and steady snow cover are noted only in separate days since December. The warm period begins in March. An annual amount of precipitation apprx. 650 mm. Number of hours of sunshine in a year apprx. 1800. Because of the unstable cyclonic nature of atmospheric processes inherent to the Baltics, weather is changeable, cloudiness and speed of wind from time to time amplify. However thanks to influence of the Gulf of Riga, water to-rogo are the condenser of heat, weather in Yu. in comparison with other districts of Latvia has a number of features: here it is much less rainfall, daily temperature variations are less expressed, air temperature is higher. The pine wood on the dunes lasting along all coast of the Gulf of Riga detains strong wind from the sea and promotes formation of a local microclimate, features to-rogo are the pure maritime air sated with aroma of coniferous trees (a half of the territory of the resort the woods, parks, gardens borrow), and the raised natural iavyzation.

For mud treatment use peat dirt from the field Slokas near Kemeri and sapropelic dirt from the lake Ka-niyeris and Babites.

V Yu. there is a large number of medical institutions and recreational constructions: sanatoria for adults and children, mainly a cardiological and neurologic profile, rest house, boarding houses for treatment and rest, resort policlinics, to a lemato medical pavilions, water mud baths, terrenkura, sports grounds, and also hotels and campings. The largest sanatorium and recreational institutions: sanatoria Baltic and Yaunkemeri (in the last there is department for rehabilitation of the patients who had a myocardial infarction), rest houses and boarding houses for family rest (Lielupe, Bulduri, Riga, of Yu. A. Gagarin, etc.). In Jurmala the research laboratory of balneology of the Latvian republican council for management of resorts of labor unions is located.

Indications: diseases of bodies of blood circulation, including vessels of extremities, digestive organs, upper respiratory tracts, peripheral nervous system, musculoskeletal system, female generative organs, and also functional frustration of a nervous system.
