GEOGRAPHICAL ZONING — division of the territory of the globe, continent, country, edge, area into the medikogeografichesky regions (belts, provinces, areas) which are characterized by uniformity natural and the socio-economic factors influencing health of the population.

The main objective of R. of m - g is identification of the regions which are characterized in connection with their uniformity specifics of regional pathology (see. Geographical pathology ).

The river of m - g is carried out on the basis of complex medico-geographical studying of the territory and represents its final stage (see. medico-geographical description ). Results of division into districts make out in the form of special cards on which apply borders of medico-geographical regions. In legends to cards give the developed characteristic of each of the allocated medico-geographical regions with the indication of the factors and conditions influencing health of the population in borders of these regions and causing developing of these or those diseases and patol, states. So, within the Tyumen region of RSFSR 6 medico-geographical provinces divided, in turn, into 25 medico-geographical districts are allocated.

Existence specific meteorol is characteristic of the districts located in the province of the Arctic coast. the factors causing so-called meteoneurosises in people (see Klimatopatologiya), the diseases connected with overcooling, snow conjunctivitis, etc., and also existence of the natural centers of an alveococcosis (see), a trichinosis (see) etc. In districts of the South taiga province there are centers of a tick-borne encephalitis (see a tick-borne Encephalitis), tularemias (see), a local craw (see the Craw local). In the districts located on coast of the Ob Rivers and Irtysh — the centers of an opisthorchosis (see) and a diphyllobotriasis (see) etc.

R. of m - g has important scientific and practical value. On its basis it is possible to plan and carry out the differentiated preventive actions directed to preservation and promotion of health of the population, to fight against the diseases connected with adverse environmental factors in each medico-geographical region. At economic development of new territories of R. of m - g allows to develop evidence-based forecasts of the incidence of the population connected with adverse influence of natural factors and to hold necessary events for their prevention, including directed to improvement of the environment and creation of the corresponding working conditions and life of the population. The Soviet medico-geographers made cards of medico-geographical zoning for many regions, they are published in geographical atlases and other editions.
