GELLER Josef (Heller Joseph, sort. in 1896) — the Polish biochemist, the member correspondent. Polish academy of Sciences (1952). Having ended in 1922 medical f-t Lviv un-that, it was improved on biochemistry at Ya. O. Parnas. From 1925 to 1935 — the head of analytical laboratory, then till 1939 — the director State in-that hygiene (Krakow). In 1940 — 1941 — professor of biochemistry in Lviv un-those; two next years in Warsaw gave lectures on biochemistry and human physiology in underground un-those. From 1946 to 1951 — professor of zoophysiology at Wroclaw un-those; since 1951 — the head of department fiziol, chemistry Medical in-that in Warsaw and at the same time (since 1954) director Ying-that biochemistry and biophysics of the Polish academy of Sciences.

Y. Geller is an author apprx. 100 scientific works which considerable part is devoted to original pilot studies, hl. obr. on physiology, biochemistry and morphology of insects at various stages of development.

He studied oxidizing processes, water-salt and especially phosphoric exchange at insects at various heating environments and diets. It studied also process of formation of ammonia and contents it in blood. He together with Ya. O. Parnas established that the ammonia collecting in blood communicates adenylic system of erythrocytes. These works are of great importance for theoretical calculations and practical definition acid-base equilibrium (see). Y. Geller in 1952 was elected the chairman of National biochemical committee, and in 1967 — the vice-president of the International biochemical union.
