GAS-GENERATING WORKSHOP, occupational health — the workshop at manufacturing enterprise where combustible (fuel) gases from solid fuel are produced. Gas is produced in gas generators, the quantity to-rykh on the gas plant fluctuates over a wide range.
Depending on a type of the processed solid fuel distinguish the following types of gas generators: for lean fuel — with an insignificant exit of volatile substances (coke, anthracite, lean coals); for bituminous fuel — with a considerable exit of volatile substances (brown coals); for peat fuel.
Rapid development of the gas industry (extraction of natural gas) in the USSR led to almost full replacement of generator gases natural since cost value of the last is much lower. In 1970 production of generator gas made only 1% of extraction of natural gas. In foreign countries (Germany, Great Britain) where a little natural gas, gas generators are widely applied in various industries.
The general flow diagram of production of gas in G. of c. it consists of the following processes: preparation of fuel, supply of fuel, gasification, processing of gas (cooling and cleaning) and transportation of gas to the consumer.
The main professional harm in G. of c.: excess heat release, content in air of production rooms of carbon monoxide, dust content. First aid and treatment — see Carbon monoxide.
Air temperature in G.'s rooms of c. reaches in winter time often to 26 °, in the summer — to 38 °. Air temperature depends on a type of initial fuel, like a gas generator, conditions of air exchange, etc.
The composition of generator gas depends on fuel (table). Apparently from the table, the greatest concentration of carbon monoxide is observed during the receiving generator gas from peat.
The reason of release of carbon monoxide in air G. of c. leakage of the equipment, the wrong conducting process are.
Concentration of dust and its physical. - chemical properties in certain rooms of G. of c. depend on type of usable fuel, the general flow diagram of production. The main sources of release of dust are devices for crushing and sorting of fuel. Concentration of dust at nek-ry operations can be considerable.
Main actions for improvement of working conditions in G. of c.: sealing of the equipment and pipelines; the device of the local exhaust ventilation from sources of release of carbon monoxide and dust and rational general ventilation of workrooms; constant control behind concentration of carbon monoxide in air and the alarm system in case of its increase to dangerous levels. In G. of c. the gas-rescuing station shall be organized (see. Gas-rescuing service ).
