GAAZ Fedor Petrovich

GAAZ Fedor Petrovich (1780 — 1853) — the doctor and the public figure. Was born in Germany. Got an education in high fur boots of Yen and Vienna. To Russia moved in 1803 and since 1806 the hl worked. the doctor Pavlovsk-tsy in Moscow (nowadays the 4th city clinical-tsa). In 1809 — 1810 studied healing waters in the Caucasus and in 1811 published the book, in a cut described existing and again to them open mineral sources in Pyatigorsk and Yessentuki. In 1825 held a position of the shtadt-physicist of Moscow, but it was soon dismissed since the reforms undertaken by it on medical service of the population caused discontent of administration. Since 1828 until the end of the life was a member of the Moscow provincial prison committee and the chief physician of the Moscow prisons. F. P. Gaaz devoted all the life to care of the prisoners condemned on penal servitude, their children of sick and homeless poor people. F. P. Gaaz achieved considerable improvement of keeping of prisoners, cancellation of shaving of a half of the head to women and exiled, an iron rod, with the help to-rogo held down 8 — 12 arrested during the following on penal servitude; iron shackles began to sheathe skin. At insistance and under F. P. Gaaz's observation the Moscow prison lock was reconstructed and at it workshops were open. On its initiative in 1832 at transit prison in Moscow on Vorobyovy Gory the prison hospital on 120 beds is constructed; for children of prisoners schools were created. On the donations collected by F. P. Gaaz in Moscow, in Maly Kazenny Lane (nowadays Mechnikov Lane), the hospital where accepted on treatment of homeless patients was constructed. At this hospital of veins and he: spent all the savings for the help to poor people and arrested, and itself in loneliness and poverty died in hospital. The unselfish doctor it was for a long time held in the people in remembrance. In 1909 about hospital where there lived F. P. Gaaz, to it the monument was built.
