FOGESA-PROSKAUERA REACTION

FOGESA — PROSKAUERA REAKTION (O. Voges, is mute. bacteriologist, sort. in 1867; Century of Proskauer, is mute. bacteriologist, 1851 — 1915; synonym: reaction to acetylmethylcarbinol, atse-toinovy reaction) — the test used for differentiation of bacteria.

In 1898 Mr. Foges and Proskauer found out that in fluid medium with glucose after addition of 40% of solution caustic heat cultures of nek-ry representatives of group of colibacilli (see Colibacillus) are painted in pink color, and cultures of other bacteria of this group remain colourless. In the subsequent this phenomenon was found in representatives of many other families gram-negative and gram-put lny microorganisms. In 1906 Mr. Harden and Uolpol (A. Harden, G. S. Walpole) showed that pink coloring is explained by fermentation of glucose (see) with formation of acetylmethylcarbinol (methyl-acetyl carbinol), to-ry in the presence of caustic heat and oxygen of air is oxidized to the diacetyl reacting with decomposition products of arginine (group of guanidine) — derivative peptone. The complex painted in pink color results, chemical composition to-rogo is not known yet.
