FLUORATION of WATER — addition to mains water with the lowered natural content of fluorine of fluorinated reagents for the purpose of the prevention of caries of teeth at the population.
Originally F. it was entered in 1945 in three towns of the USA century after H. Dean showed existence of inverse relation between concentration of fluorine in drinking water and incidence of caries. The minimum prevalence of caries (see Caries of teeth) observed at the content of fluorine in drinking water 0,8 — 1,5 mg/l, at the same time in the majority of the rivers and lakes its concentration less than 0,5 mg/l. However the question of admissibility of additional administration of fluorine in an organism with drinking water a row of years raised doubts in view of high toxicity >of fluorine (see). The complex of the researches conducted by the Soviet scientists in the endemic centers of a fluorosis in areas with various content of fluorine in water sources confirmed anti-carious effect of fluorine and showed full harmlessness for an organism of the water containing fluorine in concentration
no more than 1,5 mg/l. R. D. Gabovi-cha, V. A. Knizhnikov, A. F. Aksyu's these works, etc. allowed to recommend F. century in the USSR also promoted its wide spread occurance in the world. The indication to F. century the low content of fluorine in drinking water (less than 0,5 mg/l) at a high prevalence of the population is caries. Content of fluorine in drinking water should be brought to 1 mg/l. Increase in concentration of fluorine in water of St.
1,5 mg/l is inadmissible since causes specific damage of teeth (see the Fluorosis).
The main (and biologically equivalent) reagents for F. are sodium and sodium fluosilicate century, to-rye enter into the filtered water by means of the dosing equipment. Accuracy of a dosage is ±5%. It is preferable to use the equipment which is automatically dosing solution of reagent depending on fluctuations of a water discharge or concentration of fluorine in it.
Dignity. control at F. consists in systematic definition of concentration of fluorine in the fluorinated water by means of a ftorselek-tivny electrode with automatic recording of results century. For the purpose of control of anticarious efficiency F. century annually perform inspection by stomatologists of specially allocated groups of school students on incidence of caries. Among younger school students decrease in a prevalence of teeth caries is found already 2 — 3 later from the beginning F. century.
