EHINOPSYN (echino p sinum; cn. A) — stimulator of the central nervous system; the alkaloid which is contained in seeds of a globe-thistle ordinary (Echinops Rirto L.). In medical practice it was used in the form of nitrate (Echinopsini nitras).

On pharmakol. to properties it is close to strychnine (see). Like strychnine increases reflex irritability of a spinal cord, tones up skeletal muscles, but is less active. In high doses causes spasms.

It is excluded from the State register (the order of the Minister of Health of the USSR No. 630 of June 10, 1981).
