COMORO ISLANDS, Komorsky State — the state on the islands of the same name in the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean, at coast of East Africa. The area is 2171 km 2 . Population of 310 thousand people (1976). The capital — Moroni (15,9 thousand zhit. with suburbs, 1973). Administrative division — 4 districts. Ofits. language — French; most of the population speaks Swahili.

K. O. since 1975 — the independent republic, the former possession of France (since the end of 19 century). The head of state — the president. Executive power belongs to the government, activity to-rogo controls National national council.

K. O. are located on islands of a volcanic origin. The climate is tropical, monsoonal. K. O. economy is developed poorly and founded on page - x. production (the cassava, rice, corn, and also essential oil-bearing cultures are grown up). The meat-and-milk livestock production is developed. The industry is presented by the small enterprises for processing of page - x. products.

The natural movement of the population in 1970 — 1975, on ofitsa. to the data published in editions of WHO it was characterized by the following indicators (on 1000 people): birth rate 46,6, mortality 21,7, natural increase 24,9. Child mortality 57,7 on 1000 live-born.

Are extended to K.O. inf. and parasitic diseases: malaria, whooping cough, gonorrhea, measles, syphilis, inf. hepatitis, tuberculosis, dysentery. In 1970 cases of a leprosy, meningitis and tetanus were registered. In 1975 there were 2675 cases of cholera.

The management and financing of healthcare institutions and pharm, services carries out management of health care which is subordinated to the minister of public health care.

Hospital help in 1972 was given in 30 State Healthcare Institutions which had 612 beds (21,9 beds on 10 thousand zhit.), including 3-tsakh the general type, 5-tsakh in rural districts and 22 centers of health care with maternity beds. Profiling of beds: 50 obstetric and gynecologic, 10 pediatric and 65 for treatment of TB patients, the others — the general (1968). Extra hospital help in 1971 was given in polyclinic departments of BC, the centers of health care, 2 clinics, or the medico-social centers, 50 rural points of medical aid (the name and content of work of healthcare institutions To. In 1973 in the country 19 doctors worked (1 doctor on 15 320 zhit.), 2 dentists, 2 druggists, 14 midwifes, 7 assistants to the midwife, St. 70 nurses and 70 assistants to the nurse, apprx. 180 people of support personnel. Doctors have training abroad. In 1972 the school on training of average medics is organized.
