CISTRON (a synonym a gene) — genetic unit of function, the site of molecule DNA coding primary structure of the corresponding protein or its subunit. The concept «cistron» is entered in 1957 by S. Benzer during the studying of various rll of mutants of a phage of T4 with the help cis-a trance test (see. Molecular genetics). C. represents the site of molecule DNA and has considerably big extent (several cells, sometimes to one thousand couples of nucleotides), than units of a recombination (see) — recon and mutations (see) — a muton. Extent of mutons is equal to the extent of separate couples of nucleotides.
