CHAIN REFLEX — the difficult reflex act in which one reflex is a proximate cause of emergence of the subsequent.

Numerous pilot studies showed that the chain nature of processes is not limited only to reflex acts of the lowest order — the movement, blood circulation, breath. Emphasizing universality of this principle, I. P. Pavlov extended it and to higher nervous activity (see) — on instincts. About existence of the interrelation and strict sequence of separate stages characteristic of mental activity, I. M. Sechenov wrote. The principle of consecutive and successive expansion of separate behavioural acts when the result of the previous action defines the beginning and effectiveness of the subsequent, is one of the universal principles of the theory of functional systems of P. K. Anokhin (see. Functional systems).
