CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, Republic Cape Verde Islands — the state on islands in the Atlantic Ocean at the western coast of Africa. The area — 4033 km 2 , the population — 299,8 thousand people (1975). The capital — Praia (the St. 30 thousand zhit., 1972). Ofits. Portuguese.

3. M of O. — the republic, in the past — colony of Portugal (since 15 century). Independence is declared on July 5, 1975. The head of state — the president. The supreme legislative body — National people's assembly (unicameral parliament). Executive power belongs to the government.

Relief 3. M of O. preferential mountainous. Climate passatny. 3. M of O. — economically underdeveloped country. Traditional occupation of the population — agriculture, fishery and cattle breeding. There are enterprises for processing of fish, production of alcohol, soap, vegetable oil, cement.

The natural movement of the population is characterized by the following indicators (on 1000 people): birth rate 29,3; general mortality 8,9; natural increase 20,4; child mortality 78,9 for 1000 live-born (1974).

From diseases flu, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, whooping cough, measles, a typhoid and paratyphus, amoebic dysentery, etc. are most frequent (1967). In 1974 217 cases of cholera, in 1975 — 20 cases were registered.

In the country there are (1969) 11 BCs and 4 centers of health in which 376 beds are developed (15,0 beds on 10 000 inhabitants).

The extra hospital help was 3 out-patient departments of BC, 9 centers of health care, 6 clinics, 21 first-aid posts and the 13th dignity. points. 5 centers for health protection of mother and the child, 2 centers of health protection of school students, 9 dental surgery departments and 3 laboratories of public health care function (1968).

Medical shots of the country consist of 22 doctors (1 doctor on 12 950 inhabitants) — from them 16 2 dentists, 1 druggist, 3 midwifes and 73 nurses (1972) work in the cities and 6 in rural areas.
