Bernardo's USSYo (Houssay Bernardo Alberto, 1887 — 1971) — the Argentina physiologist and the endocrinologist, the Nobel Prize laureate (1947).
In 1904 ended pharmaceutical f-t of university in Buenos Aires. In 1911 protected dokt. the thesis on the subject «Studying of Physiological Effect of Extracts of a Hypophysis». Professor of physiology veterinary (1910 — 1919) and medical
(1919—1943, 1945—1946, 1955 —1957) faculties un-that, the founder and the director Ying-that physiology un-that in Buenos Aires (1919 — 1943); the founder and the director Ying-that experimental biology and medicine (since 1944), professor-researcher un-that in Buenos Aires (1957-1969).
B. Usse published more than 500 scientific works devoted to various problems of physiology, endocrinology, pharmacology, biochemistry, experimental pathology; he is the author of several monographs, including the textbook «Human physiology» (1951) translated to many languages. Made the significant contribution of B. Usse in development of endocrinology: he investigated secretory functions of a hypophysis, adrenal glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands, secretion of insulin a pancreas, a pathogeny of a diabetes mellitus. In 20 — the 30th B. Usse with employees showed that the front share of a hypophysis produces the hormone having diabetogenic (protivoinsulyarny) effect (see Diabetes); afterwards it was established that it is somatotropic hormone. For opening of a role of an anterior pituitary hormone in regulation of carbohydrate metabolism to it together with K. Cory and G. Cory the Nobel Prize was awarded.
Development of physiological and medical researches in Argentina, reform of university education is connected with a name of B. Usse. It was a member and the honorary member more than 100 national and foreign academies and societies, including. The Argentina medical academy (since 1927, in 1936 — 1937 its president), the Argentina academy of Sciences (since 1946). B. Usse was one of organizers, and from 1934 to 1957 the president of the Argentina scientific association. It was a member of National academy of medicine in Paris, London royal about-va, National academy of Sciences of the USA, honourable doctor Parizhsky, the Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard high fur boots, etc.
