BETA SITOSTEROL (Beta-sitosterinum; sitosterol) — antikholesterinemichesky means. Is sterol of a plant origin (phytosterol). Contains in various concentration in corn, sunflower and cotton oils. It was used for treatment of patients with atherosclerosis and other diseases at which the increased content of cholesterol in blood is observed. The mechanism of antikholesterinemichesky action of B. - page is not found out. There is an opinion that vegetable sterols interfere with esterification of food cholesterol and by that to its absorption. Perhaps, in B.'s intestines - the page reacts with cholesterol, forming low solubility crystals which are brought out of an organism. It is supposed also that B. - page blocks the fermental system promoting absorption in intestines of cholesterol. It is not excluded that the hypochilesterinemia coming at B.'s treatment - the page, depends on the strengthened removal of bile acids and the events at the same time of the increased oxidation of cholesterol in a liver.

In 1972 drug is excluded from the nomenclature of pharmaceuticals.
